It is rare that Grey’s Anatomy is able to stay far enough ahead behind-the-scenes to be able to allow members of the press to watch episodes in advance of their airdate, but it seems that this year, things are not only working differently, but more quickly as well, as tomorrow’s episode, “Dark Was the Night,” was completed with just enough time to spare so that ABC could share it with us early. As a result, I’ve drummed up questions from our Twitter account regarding this episode in order to do a question and answer session in what is one of the show’s most intense episodes to date. So let’s get to it, shall we?
There were lots and lots of questions regarding Meredith and Derek, so let’s get to those first, so they are out of the way.
Please give us some hints if MerDer get Zola back in the episode.
We do indeed finally get what would appear to be a definitive answer regarding Zola coming back to Meredith and Derek, though I can’t tell you which way it sways, but I can tell you that you’ll find out within the opening minutes of the episode, which picks up exactly where “Heart-Shaped Box” left off. The outcome does certainly seem to suggest that it will lead to a shift in Meredith and Derek’s relationship – something I was so grateful to see after Derek has seemingly been punishing Meredith all season.
If you can share ANYTHING MerDer-related we would be happy. Also, do you know if there are no more episodes till January?
Meredith and Derek don’t get a whole lot of screentime together in this episode – Meredith is not at Seattle Grace for most of the episode. However, that does not mean that their relationship or issues come to a screeching halt either. There’s MerDer stuff in the episode for sure.
As for whether or not we’ll get new episodes before January, it’s looking highly unlikely. Though Shonda Rhimes herself admitted she wasn’t totally sure if she was correct or not, she did say that “Dark Was the Night” would be the last episode until 2012, and I’m betting it will be. With a cliffhanger ending, a two-hour Private Practice next week, and tons of holiday specials in the weeks to follow, Grey’s almost certainly won’t be back until after the new year.
Can you please give us hints tonight about Meredith; will she get hurt? Will Derek & Cristina know? Or stay in the dark about the crash?
There’s lots of great Meredith stuff in this episode. It’s definitely not centered on her character – in fact, I’d say this episode did a better job at character balance than the show normally does – but there’s still lots of great Meredith. She does get hurt, but it’s unclear to what extent, and this is not a repeat of the third season’s ferryboat crash arc where nobody knew what was going on with Meredith. This time around, everybody knows that Alex and Meredith are stuck in the middle of nowhere.
How’s the MD storyline so far ?
This episode really holds a promising change for Meredith and Derek’s relationship, I think. I was really happy with the direction that it seemed to take. It seems like much of the season has been Derek being mad and yelling at Derek, but that situation is somewhat reversed this week, and Derek finally owns up to the fact that he hasn’t been the greatest husband.
Any clues about the big cliffhanger would be appreciated. Clues about who the cliffhanger is about?
It’s not what you expect. Thankfully, it isn’t “Are Meredith and Alex going to die?!?!?” But I was definitely left at the end of the episode with a “WTF?” kind of feeling. Plus, there’s not just one, giant cliffhanger. In usual Grey’s Anatomy fashion, there are many, many storylines left hanging, including not only Meredith and Alex’s dilemma, but another storyline you probably aren’t going to want to wait until January to see resolved.
Does anyone die?
This is a medical series. Of course there are deaths.
More tidbits from “Dark Was the Night”
- Make sure your extra-large box of Kleenex is sitting by your side.
- The episode is incredibly intense. However, it isn’t intense in normal Grey’s Anatomy fashion, in that these episodes aren’t like normal intensity-driven episodes, such as “It’s the End of the World” or “Death and All His Friends.” This episode is quieter, perhaps even a bit slower-paced, but the situations all of the doctors are put in are intense and ramps up your heartbeat.
- Derek, Mark, and Arizona have some great scenes discussing Sofia.
Overall, “Dark Was the Night” is a great way for Grey’s Anatomy to end its 2011 run. It’s definitely a fantastic episode, and while it’s style and format may be off-putting to some, I certainly enjoyed it. It’s an episode that kept me on the edge of my seat and ended in a way I certainly did not expect. Don’t envy me for having the opportunity to see it early, because now it means I have to live with the cliffhangers even longer.
