"She goes, I go." We start off this Derek-centered episode with a conference room scene, where we are amidst a discussion between the doctors referring to if they want to keep Cristina in surgery. We can see in Derek, after he states this, that he is sparking a strong loyalty to Cristina as he attempts to take her under his McDreamy wing. (Cozy!)
On another note, we are introduced to Amelia Shepherd soon after, Derek's youngest sister. She comes prancing into the hospital enthusiastically, first spotting Mark and having a mini-reunion with him. Yay. Great. *eyeroll* We see her refer to him getting shot without a mere wince, which strikes, at least me, as strange. (He's such a family man, or really, he seems like he is.)
As we move along in this episode, we finally get to see Meredith, Derek and Amelia meet all together. Amelia's and Derek's first interaction isn't exactly as we expect. Although Amelia is wide-eyed and welcoming, expecting something along the lines of a bear hug, Derek is cold shouldered and unfriendly. While Amelia gushes about finally meeting Meredith, Derek remains stone-faced, obviously displeased and frustrated. Constantly shaking his head and frowning, he doesn't even jump at the fact that Amelia found a man on the plane with a tumor. Well, besides referring to the fact that the man was feeling Amelia up on the plane anyways.
Meredith, on the other hand, is put on a case with April where they're dealing with a couple's complicated case. Meredith is still attempting to befriend April, which is proving to be a unique task. (And a very, very hard one.)
Now, while Amelia, Cristina and Derek are taking the patient to a CT, their conversation hasn't improved in the least. Amelia asks Derek if it hurt when he was shot, and he responds that conversing with her is hurting him. She criticizes Cristina, along with using the terms: "Why don't you just shoot the guy?" And Derek snaps, roughly responding with, "Don't talk about shooting people in this building." He was obviously disturbed by the question, leaving the room, leaving Amelia in shock.
When we finally see Meredith and Derek have a scene in this episode, we learn a lot about Amelia. Meredith confronts Derek about his harsh feelings towards her, and he reveals that she crashed his car while being high on pain pills. While she was home, she then overdosed, died for three minutes, needing Derek to save her. He did, and now he's completely untrustworthy of her abilities in the OR.
Meanwhile, while Meredith isn't dealing with Kepner (who apparently CANNOT just leave Meredith alone) and the awkward couple's case, is fending off Callie who wants to kick Cristina out. She's trying her best to defend her person, but it seems like that entire day is making it very, very hard.
We see, then, exactly how much Derek is frustrated by the whole situation. While in the scrub room, Derek and Amelia have a rough argument. She gets mad at him for not wanting to include her in the surgery, and he's just flat out mad that she's there in the first place. After a heated fight, Derek reluctantly agrees to let her join him. During the surgery, Derek's working very hard to try and get Cristina to actually work in the OR. She's very stressed and nervous, with memories of ‘that day' seemingly haunting her. Although Amelia bursts in to take Cristina's place, it's obvious that he really tried to help her out. Cristina eventually leaves, though, upset and stressed. Amelia dares to call Cristina a ‘dud.' Derek, angry, snaps, and orders her out of the OR. Wow, he's really defending Cristina. You go, Derek! *fist-pump*
Derek confronts Cristina later, accusing her of flaming out and trying to convince her to actually try. He also admits that she's someone he cares about. How she's his family. It's really a great moment between the two- it also shows how much Derek cares for Meredith, by accepting her family as... his. Derek being sweet, caring Derek, offers to help Cristina remember the surgery she performed on her. They have a problem, though- she can't remember where to start. He opens up his shirt to reveal his scar, showing her where she started and handing her a scalpel. She starts. (Derek, you are SUCH a good guy. So much caring. So much dedication. So much everything.)
Our final Derek and Amelia scene takes place outside the hospital, Derek leaning on Amelia's car (Has the concept of cars come up a lot this season? Or is that just me?) Without explanation, he give a speech about the day his dad was killed. So emotional. So beautiful. With a tearful expression exchanged between the both of them, they talk about it, and eventually meet a realization: Amelia says, "I remember, I was trying to get to him, I couldn't move... " And Derek responds, quietly, with: "Because I was holding you so tightly... you couldn't budge." And there is where we really understand their relationship. It's like... BAM. It hits you. Derek explains that he just wants her to stay little, quiet and safe. But she's not. He just doesn't want her to realize that pain really does exist.
We get a nice little scene at the end with Meredith, Lexie, Alex, Jackson and April (Where she admits that guys think she's annoying. Yes, yes they do.) where they have a sassy little retort fest, basically insulting each other and laughing and... Yeah. It reminds me of the M.A.G.I.C times. Doesn't it? Alex, on the other hand, is trying to get over his fear of elevators.
So, we didn't get much MerDer (except we DID get mention of a MD dreamhouse!), or Mer, in this episode, but the Derek was extraordinary and overwhelming.
